Accepted PD Activity Types
- Transcripted college or university credits from a regionally accredited institution (at least 3 credits must be transcripted)
- Continuing Education Contact Hours (CECH) from approved providers (15 CECH = 1 renewal credit)
- Specialized learning experiences approved by the SD DOE
- Online self-study courses from state-approved providers
- State-approved mentor program participation (as mentee or mentor for 2 years)
Special Rules & Notes
Important notes for this license
- 6 education-related renewal credits required per 5-year cycle (15 contact hours = 1 renewal credit, so 90 contact hours = 6 credits)
- At least 3 of the 6 credits must be transcripted college credits or specialized learning experience hours
- Remaining 3 credits may be CECH or additional transcripted credits
- All educators must complete a minimum of 1 clock hour of approved free suicide awareness and prevention training
- Certificate expires July 1 of the expiration year; if not renewed by October 1, certificate becomes invalid
- Teachers with a master's degree may use any combination of transcripted credits and CECH
- Alternative: participating as mentee or mentor in a state-approved mentor program for 2 years satisfies renewal
- Renewal submitted through the South Dakota Educator Certification Portal at sd.gov/educator
