What is ChalkReady?

ChalkReady is a free, state-by-state guide that helps K–12 teachers understand their license renewal and professional development requirements. We translate dense bureaucratic language from state education department websites into plain English, so you can spend less time deciphering policy documents and more time in the classroom.

The teacher certification system has always been complicated — but it's getting more so. Between DOE restructuring, new AI literacy mandates, expiring federal funding, and interstate mobility rules, keeping your license current has become a moving target. ChalkReady exists to make that target visible.

Why does this exist?

Teachers deserve clear, free information about what they need to keep their licenses. Here's what's making the landscape more confusing right now:

• DOE restructuring: The federal Department of Education is being reorganized, pushing more policy decisions to individual states. Requirements are changing faster than usual.
• New AI literacy mandates: 25+ states have passed or are actively considering new AI literacy requirements for teachers — an entirely new professional development category that didn't exist a few years ago.
• ESSER funding cliff: Federal relief funding expired in March 2026. More teachers are now paying out of pocket for required PD hours, making cost comparisons and free alternatives more important than ever.
• Teacher shortage: Alternative certification pathways are expanding to address the shortage, creating a growing population of newer teachers navigating renewal rules for the first time.

How we source our data

Every requirement on ChalkReady is sourced directly from official state Department of Education websites. We do not rely on secondhand summaries, third-party databases, or unverified sources.

Each license type page includes:

• ✓A direct link to the official source from the state DOE
• ✓A "last verified" date so you know how recently we checked
• ✓Notes on pending legislation or upcoming rule changes when relevant

We review and update state pages regularly. If you notice outdated information, please let us know.
