Accepted PD Activity Types

  • Professional Development Points (PDPs) from workshops, courses, or approved activities
  • College or university coursework (graduate or undergraduate)
  • Curriculum development, instructional coaching, or peer mentoring recognized by employer
  • National Board Certification or renewal activities
  • Individual Professional Development Plan (IPDP)-approved activities

Special Rules & Notes

Important notes for this license

  • 150 PDPs required per 5-year renewal cycle
  • Required PDP distribution: at least 15 PDPs in SEI/ESL/ELL or Bilingual Education; at least 15 PDPs in strategies for students with disabilities or diverse learning styles; at least 15 PDPs in the content area of the license; at least 15 PDPs in pedagogy; remaining 90 PDPs may be elective
  • A minimum of 10 PDPs must be earned in a single topic for those points to count toward renewal
  • Public school educators must have an IPDP approved by their district; private school educators are strongly encouraged to do so
  • Renewal submitted through the Educator Licensure and Recruitment (ELAR) system at doe.mass.edu
  • Primary area renewal fee: $100; each additional area: $25
  • License period runs for 5 calendar years from date issued or last renewed
