  • Semester hours of college credit (graduate or undergraduate) from a regionally accredited institution
  • Iowa Professional Development Plan (IPDP) — 1 IPDP plan counts as 3 renewal credits

Special Rules & Notes

Important notes for this license

  • 6 renewal credits required per 5-year cycle
  • Mandatory reporter training for child abuse is required at every renewal
  • Effective July 1, 2023 (HF 672): educators with a master's degree or higher AND at least 10 years of licensed experience in Iowa are exempt from the 6-credit renewal requirement
  • Late renewal: $25 per month late fee for active Iowa educators whose license has expired
  • Renewal applications submitted through the BOEE Online Renewal System
  • License expires on June 30 of the renewal year
