Renewing your Iowa teaching license is one of those things that sounds more complicated than it actually is — until you forget a step and end up paying late fees. Whether you hold a Standard Teaching License or a Master Educator License, the process is straightforward if you plan ahead.

This guide covers everything you need to know about how to renew your teaching license in Iowa in 2026: how many credits you need, what counts, the mandatory reporter training requirement, and the newer master's degree exemption that could save you time and money.

The Basics: Iowa Teaching License Renewal at a Glance

  • Renewal cycle: Every 5 years
  • Credits required: 6 renewal credits (Standard License) or 4 renewal credits (Master Educator License)
  • Governing body: Board of Educational Examiners (BOEE)
  • Where to renew: BOEE Online Renewal System — educate.iowa.gov
  • Renewal fee: $95
  • License expiration: June 30 of the renewal year

Your license expiration date is listed on your current license. If you're not sure when yours expires, log in to the BOEE online system to check your status.

Understanding the Credit Requirements

Iowa uses a credit-based renewal system. How many credits you need depends on which license you hold:

  • Standard Teaching License: 6 renewal credits per 5-year cycle
  • Master Educator License: 4 renewal credits per 5-year cycle

One important note: Iowa measures requirements in "renewal credits," not contact hours. A renewal credit is typically equivalent to 1 semester hour of college credit. The Iowa Professional Development Plan (IPDP) also generates renewal credits — more on that below.

What Counts as Renewal Credit in Iowa?

Iowa accepts the following types of professional development toward your renewal credits:

  • College semester hours — Graduate or undergraduate credit from a regionally accredited institution (1 semester hour = 1 renewal credit)
  • Iowa Professional Development Plan (IPDP) — Completing 1 IPDP counts as 3 renewal credits for Standard License holders, or 2 credits for Master Educator License holders

The IPDP Option

The Iowa Professional Development Plan is a popular way to earn renewal credits without taking formal college courses. Your IPDP is a structured plan that you develop with your evaluator, outlining professional growth goals and the activities you'll complete to meet them.

For Standard License holders, one completed IPDP earns 3 of your 6 required credits — meaning you'd only need 3 additional college credits. For Master Educator License holders, one IPDP earns 2 of your 4 required credits.

Mandatory Reporter Training: Don't Skip This

Iowa requires all educators to complete mandatory reporter training for child abuse at every renewal. This is not optional and is separate from your credit requirements. If you don't complete this training, your renewal will not be processed — even if you have all your credits in order.

Most school districts include mandatory reporter training as part of their annual professional development. If yours doesn't, the Iowa Department of Human Services offers approved training options. Make sure you have a current certificate of completion before you submit your renewal application.

The Master's Degree Exemption (HF 672)

Starting July 1, 2023, Iowa educators who meet both of the following criteria are exempt from the renewal credit requirement entirely:

  • Hold a master's degree or higher
  • Have at least 10 years of licensed experience in Iowa

If you qualify, you still need to renew your license and pay the $95 fee — but you don't need to earn any renewal credits. You also still need to complete the mandatory reporter training.

This exemption applies to both Standard Teaching License and Master Educator License holders. If you think you qualify, verify your eligibility through the BOEE system before your renewal cycle begins.

The Renewal Timeline

Iowa teaching licenses expire on June 30 of the renewal year. You should begin the renewal process well before that date to avoid late fees.

Example: If your license expires June 30, 2026, you should have all your credits completed and your application submitted before that date. Iowa does not offer a grace period — if your license expires and you're still teaching, late fees begin accumulating immediately.

How to Submit Your Renewal

Iowa handles license renewals through the BOEE Online Renewal System. Here's the process:

  1. Log in to the BOEE system at educate.iowa.gov using your educator credentials.
  2. Verify your renewal credit status. Check that all credits — college coursework, IPDP completion — are reflected in the system.
  3. Upload mandatory reporter training documentation. Make sure your current certificate of completion for child abuse mandatory reporter training is on file.
  4. Submit your renewal application. Complete the online application and verify all information is accurate.
  5. Pay the $95 renewal fee. Payment is processed online through the BOEE system.
  6. Receive confirmation. You'll get an email confirmation once your renewal is processed and your updated license is available.

What Happens If You Miss Your Renewal Deadline?

If your license expires and you're actively teaching in Iowa, you'll be charged a $25 per month late fee. These fees add up quickly — if you're 6 months late, that's an extra $150 on top of the $95 renewal fee.

An expired license also puts your employment at risk. Iowa school districts cannot employ teachers who don't hold a valid license, so your district will be notified if your license lapses.

If your license has been expired for an extended period, you may need to meet additional requirements to reinstate it. The specifics depend on how long the lapse has been — contact the BOEE directly for guidance on your situation.

Special Situations

Standard vs. Master Educator License

The Master Educator License requires fewer renewal credits (4 instead of 6) and reflects a higher level of professional accomplishment. If you hold a Standard License and are considering upgrading, check the BOEE's requirements — it may simplify your future renewals.

Out-of-State Credits

College coursework from any regionally accredited institution counts toward Iowa renewal credits, regardless of whether the institution is in Iowa. Keep official transcripts on hand so you can provide them to the BOEE if needed.

New Teachers

If you're in your first renewal cycle, start planning your credits early. Six credits over 5 years is very manageable — roughly one course per year — but it's easy to let the years slip by if you don't have a plan.

Fees at a Glance

Action Fee
Standard license renewal $95
Master Educator license renewal $95
Late fee (per month) $25/month

Your Renewal Checklist

  1. Find your license expiration date (June 30 of your renewal year)
  2. Set a calendar reminder at least 12 months before expiration
  3. Check if you qualify for the master's degree exemption (master's + 10 years Iowa experience)
  4. If not exempt: earn 6 credits (Standard) or 4 credits (Master Educator) through college coursework and/or IPDP
  5. Complete mandatory reporter training for child abuse (required every renewal, regardless of exemption status)
  6. Log in to the BOEE Online Renewal System and verify all credits and training are on file
  7. Submit your renewal application before June 30
  8. Pay the $95 fee and save your confirmation

Stay on Top of Your Renewal

Iowa's $25/month late fee is one of the more aggressive penalties among states, so staying ahead of your deadline really matters. The combination of credit requirements and mandatory reporter training means you need to track two separate things — don't let one slip while you focus on the other.
